Personality Dimensions For 1st Semester Students

“I like a teacher who gives you something to take home to think about besides homework.” — Edith Ann, [Lily Tomlin]

“I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think.”   — Socrates

Its first semester again and I have facilitated 8 Personality Dimension’s classes for first year students over the last 2 weeks.  The classes were for Social Service Worker students and Prehealth Nursing students.  Each of the sessions is 3 periods in length.

I start with a brief history of Personality Dimensions and explain how it can be used for understanding yourself and other people.  I mention those people who we think lie in bed tying to find ways to drive us crazy.   I always begin that way and I see the same looks on their faces as we proceed through something they aren’t familiar with and are unsure about being interested.

I give the students 3 sets of cards.  Each set consists of 4 temperament styles we all have one associated with Life Styles, Picure Cards and the last Communication.  We have one temperament style that is most natural to us, although some people share 2-3 styles. The others we can use when called upon but they may not feel as comfortable to us as our preferred Temperament.    To demonstrate this I ask them to write their first and last name as they usually do, and ask them how that was.  Not much response.  When I ask them to put the pen into their other hand and write their first name and last name as they usually do, there is laughter and giggles.  At this point they always open up and off and we sail along from there.

By using the cards and another exercise they discover their favoured temperament – brightest colour, their most preferred temperate, the next one and so on all the way to the one that is least like them.

I have them go into groups of like temperament styles each group discusses and answers the same 4 questions which they write on flip chart paper.   Each group takes turns presenting and in doing so they are teaching the other 3 temperaments all about themselves.  It is really fascinating how each group comes up with the same kinds of answers in each session I do.  Even the body language as they sit in their groups is reflective of that colour group in each session.  They themselves find it so fascinating and they like that they are sitting with a group that thinks mostly the way they do!

After they present I tell them what the experts say about them and they shake their heads in awe.  I tell them what the similarities and differences are of the groups and where problem areas might be.  I like to read their Evaluation sheets which confirm that most of them are walking away with something new to think about and with the hope they will understand each other better.   Their smiles and their comments about “I wish I had known this before years ago”  or “now I understand why people say this to me” or “now I know why my mother says this” confirm the session was successful.

It is an excellent tool to realize that differences are not necessarily faults.  We need to be different from each other just to survive.  You can’t change the other person but you can change the way you look at a situation.  In doing so you alleviate stress when realizing that something really isn’t a conflict after all.  Its just a different way.

This week I received some thoughtful gifts from 3 of the faculty on behalf of their class.  Yum.

…a BIG Starbucks mug with tea packages, a Starbucks Gift Card, BISCOTTI and I LOVE Biscotti, a glass purse filled with Biscotti and Baileys Chocolates.  Wasn’t that nice of them?

Busy Week & Outrageous Brownies and Sick!

Really tired….and didn’t realize it….

This week sure has been busy.  I am again facilitating Personality Dimensions to many first year student classes.    This week I have 5 of them scheduled.  Two yesterday, one today, one Thursday and one on Friday.  Each session is almost 3 hours.  On top of that my regular work is busy.  I sure put in my time with lecturing in that workshop, then getting the students oriented on  using PD cards  to determine their preferred Temperament style.  Then we have a mass confusion while I try to get them into groups to work on some questions, they present to the class and then I tie it altogether for them.  In between that I run from front to back,  to side to back to front to side of the class, clarifying what it is they are doing.  Its rather crazy I think but I love it anyway.

Anyway…. After  6 hours of that yesterday I couldn’t wait to get home to have a soothing cup of tea and put my feet up.  At the time it never occurred to me that I really got home 2 hours later than usual as a result and it was too late for me to be drinking tea if I was going to plan on sleeping that night…  caffeine…

So I was up most of the night, wandering  around and blogging and crawling back to sleep and walking…you know?  It was not much fun.  Today I dragged myself through another busy day catching up and then I had a another late Personality Dimensions workshop and got home 2 hours later again. .   Somewhere between feeling tired and wanting to relax I had chocolate on my mind.  Somewhere I forgot the reason why I was sleepy when I decided I would make the 10 minute each way walk to the store for “exercise sake”, to buy chocolate for the Outrageous Brownies I was going to bake.  Back at home I changed into comfy clothes and started melting chocolate only to realize I had no flour!!!  I changed BACK into my outdoor clothes  and walked  my sore feet to a closer convenience store to buy the flour….so that’s why I forgot to take pics of the process of making these brownies I wanted to share with you….especially to show you allll the chocolate going into it!  This is the Outrageous Brownies recipe   full of all goodness!  Try it and if you do be sure to come back and let me know what YOU think.  YUMMMMY!

But…this is how they look coming out of the oven.  At  9:45 p.m. last night this is finally how all my dishes look after I’d cleaned up after mixing the brownies.    and like this   and this   …just a helter skelter of a wash….  It’s a bigggg pan of chocolate a whole 36 oz of chocolate … 3 different kinds and nuts too!  AND I can’t dare have a taste tonight because…caffeine..you know…I’d be up half the night again.   You know…sometimes you just forget how tired you are until you are realllly tired.    Nite nite….

update…now I never did post that last night.  I was just tooo tired!  Today I brought in a big plate of the brownies to share at work.  Soon after my tiredness and headachy and achey feelings of this week sprung on me and I realized I’ve been fighting some kind of “bug” thats been going around at work.   I came home and have been sleeping it off all afternoon.  I’m sitting here for a minute sending these pics to you and back to bed I go.  Nite nite again….

Hope YOU have had a lovely day.

Personality Dimensions

Personality Dimensions Cards

It was a busy day today.   A good day. It included my facilitating a Personality Dimension’s workshop for first year nursing students.  This is a fun interactive workshop and a very enlightening tool that I facilitate to different program, first semester students at my college.   The students see it as a real eyeopener and its usually their first introduction to a workshop such as this.  It is helpful for the students to understand themselves and other people, a tool they can use when they are working in groups on assignments, meetings, work and in their every day life with family and friends.

You might be familiar or attended a True Color’s workshop, this is the Canadian version.  The concept of Personality Dimensions goes all the way to Hypocrates from which time on researchers have studied human behaviour.  Researchers have all come up with one commonality being there are 4 different temperament styles.   Each of us has these 4 temperament styles which Personality Dimensions differentiates by calling Inquiring Green, Organized Gold, Authentic Blue and Resourceful Orange.   We have one temperament style that we feel most comfortable with,  our strongest colour and comes most naturally to us (some people feel equally comfortable in more than one).  However, when we need to we are able to use the other temperament styles though they may not feel as comfortable to us.
