Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to all my American Friends.

A few years ago we went to Penn State to watch a football game.  I collect salt and pepper shakers and we bought this cute turkey salt and pepper set while we explored the town.

They are special and I put them out for both the Canadian and American Thanksgiving.

Last night I made some mincemeat tartlettes because the Love Bunny loves them for Thanksgiving.   They are little and bite size and he’ll be a happy boy when he samples them.  We’ll warm them up a bit and mmmm yummmy.  halloween-and-soup-025

Today I am off at noon until Monday and he will be arriving right around the time I get home.   We are invited to our very close friends’ place for dinner on Friday to celebrate the American Thanksgiving.  It has become a lovely tradition for the 4 of us to celebrate taking turns hosting.

I wish for my my dear blogging friends to have a very Happy Thanksgiving with your family and friends.  There is truly so much to be thankful for.

Pinecone Turkey Name Place Cards – Tutorial

For Thanksgiving this past weekend I had all intensions of making Pinecone Turkey Name Placecard Name holders.  Now I thought of this rather late…on Wednesday evening.  I crawled around under the trees at work on Thursday morning looking for cones that were partially open.  After grocery shopping and picking up this and that I finally settled down to making them later in the evening and that was the only time I could make them.  Now they are easy to make but not all “children” should be using hot glue.

Here is how I made them.  I’ll let you know why I only got to the 4th one and decided I couldn’t make another one this year.  And why I decided to use them as table decoration and give one to each couple as a favour.   YOU might want to glue a  little card with each person’s name on it to sit at their place setting.

Here are the materials needed   and oh yes these too.

I found all these goodies at the dollar store and had enough left over to make lots of other things.   So what I have pictured above for these little gobblies are a bag of tiny wiggly eyes,  coloured pipecleaners (you only need reds and oranges) and coloured feathers (or natural colours).   You’ll also need a glue gun.

For each turkey I cut 2 – 3″ lengths of orange pipecleaner and folded each one in half and twisted the ends and made the other end flatter and larger for his feet.  (sorry fuzzy)

I inserted the twisted ends into the front bottom of the pinecone for feet.

Next I took a little black pompom and glued it in the centre front for his head and glued on 2 wiggly eyes.  Careful hot!!   I took a 3″ piece of red pipecleaner and folded that in half.  I then flattened and folded under the end piece to form his little waddle.

Finally I used the coloured feathers (or you could use natural coloured feathers) and  hot glued them to the backof the cone for his tail.

Be very careful.  This is very hot, sticky business and the reason why I stopped at number 4.  See?

I had hot glued feathers stuck to my forefinger (I’d finally removed them by this picture) and thumb….and oh my that burned..and I lost some skin too.

If you make some for your Thanksgiving…please send me your pics to share.  Have fun…

What WAS funny about the whole thing was that I tried to find pinecones that were somewhat open and crawled around the trees at work looking without much success.  After I’d made all the little turkeys I set them on my diningroom table.  Whe I returned from work I couldn’t believe it – they all looked…dead!!  Belly up.  I wondered WHO had been in and done that….and why were some of the legs at the back now.  *lol*.  During the day those silly little guys had popped open, lost grip with those little orange footsies and with their rounded tummies they had flipped over.  A joke on me I guess.

Its Friday again and I hope you’ve had a great week.  This weekend is our Thanksgiving and we’re having turkey dinner at my place.  There will be 10 of us which will includes my brother and his girlfriend who are here from British Columbia.  We haven’t all gotten together with him here for Thanksgiving, or Christmas in years so it’ll be special.

In the meantime here are some corney little Hallowe’en one-liners….you might want to share with your children and/or grandchildren.  Have a lovely weekend.   Judi

Frosty Morning~ and Sewing So Fun!

How is your weather?  Has it changed from the way it used to be?  Is your spring springier and your summer longer and warmer?  We barely had any rain in Toronto this summer, just lots of heat.

It is so hard to imagine that a week ago people were actually still sunbathing and swimming in Lake in Ontario in Toronto.   It was such a gloriously sunny and hot day.  On Thanksgiving Monday around October 8th it was so hot and I swear it felt like we were the cooking turkeys.  I couldn’t believe people swimming and jetskiing in Toronto in October.  This Monday along with it being soooo dark when I left for work I actually had to scrape the frost from the windshield and flick on the rear window defroster.  That was a very rude awakening to beginning a new week.   This followed a nice enough kind of weekend.  Our weather has been so fabulous all the way from April that its getting to be very hard to let go of that kind of niceness.  I am :o) to report that today wasn’t as cool and yesterday afternoon did actually did warm up some.  Global warming is not a good thing – but in the meantime I guess I’ll just enjoy it.

How is everyone doing with their sewing?  Last night I picked up some lovely fabric, one is a blue suede and the other is a very complementary floral fabric and a white dots on blue fabric for lining.  I designed and sewed the bag in the evening but didn’t interface it because I was right – it does stand up quite nicely.  It was fun to sew and the colour combos are great I think.  Now I want to pick up some more fabric for a vest though then I would be tempted to keep them both for me…rather than put the bag into my etsy store as was planned.  We’ll see.  Pictures to follow….

Updating that – I made a similar bag last night – actually Tuesday.  The suede is rosy brick coloured complemented with a floral fabric and a great lined pattern for the lining.  I need to find a digital…hmmmm…

Thinking now about making a matching vest….key case….ipod holder…the ideas are endless….
